I made an electric splitter.
Local big box farm store had a returned 5hp 1ph 1750 tefc for $300. I got a 28gpm pump, an old I beam I had in the tall grass, 4 1/2" x 24" cylinder, an old mini RV axle from the scrap pile, a 100' #10 cord a friend gave me, hooked to 220 plug in the basement.
I can have a conversation or listen to the radio while I split now! Matches up well with my little echo battery saw for the inevitable bits and pieces I did'nt buck to length in the woods.
Had some spare JD green so it matches the tractor too.

i would be clamping an amp meter on the power line to see what it is pulling under load. guesstomate that that motor pulls a minimum of 20 amps, 100 ft of 10ga. is way too light. quick way to kill a motor if starving it for power. Will overheat. If while running it for a while and the cord or connections feels warm- that is a sure sign of eminent failure. other than that kudos on the build.

Yep, pulls a bit over 20A at peak, say when bulling through fresh cut elm etc. I measured both hot legs at the motor and found almost no voltage drop.

How'd you get the tractor and the splitter in the basement [emoji848]?
I like how you energized the splitter. What size motor is needed there?

Sounds like you have a solid grip on load. Id hazard you are pulling more than 20a at startup. Running solid or stranded 10awg?

Very nice work.

That's a (true) 5 horse motor on a 30A breaker. The wire is stranded. I believe the cord I was gifted is an RV power cable.

The valve, fittings and many components were scabbed off a hydraulic forging press that was not getting enough use for the real estate it was taking up in my blacksmith shop.
