I know the earlier 066 had different crankshafts/cases/seals/bearings, but are the rest of the parts interchangeable? Is the handle/tank and muffler the same?

I'm trying to refurbish an early 066 red light, but finding parts is difficult. I mainly need to find a tank/handle for the case.

Compare the IPL's for both the 066 and the MS660. Most dealers can still get parts for both. Many parts are the same, but you need to check the IPL

Flat-top 066s used the same tank and filter base as the 064, except for the very earliest 064s. Flat-top 066s also used a different starter housing than the MS-660.

"Bubble-top" 066s used the same tank, airbox, and covers as the MS-660.

I outfitted a straight gassed Stihl 064 with an MS660 top end. New shroud was required for the decomp valve and it hated the 660 carb. So, I rebuilt the original 064 carb and now its running again. Not sure why it rejected the MS660 carb, but it did. However, this is not supposed to be an 064 thread so I have to back out of here.

Hi J
Never seen a bubble top 066 before.
Just flat top non decomp/flat top decomp.
Learned something new again.

They were a relatively short run. It was the transition between the poly flywheel flat-top 066 with the short case, and then the
change in the crankcase to the one used on the MS-660. Pretty much everything on the bubble-top 066 is the same as the MS-660
except there were variants in the piston/cylinder, clutch, and then later they changed the carburetors a couple more times.

This is a lot of good info! From what I'm finding in the IPL above, the tank/handle part of the early 066 and MS660's are the same number, but the upper airbox/carb housing parts are different. I have the upper air box/carb housing from the 066 since it's all metal, just need the tank/handle so I should be able to buy the 660 handle and swap necessary parts over.

Hi J
Does the bubble top 066 run the same cylinder as the 660?
IE not as good as the early cylinders.

I believe 660 tank is wider and an early 066 carb box won't fit it.

How are the tanks different sizes when they have the same part number from the IPL above? Unless that IPL isn't for the early 066?

The IPLs represent several different "eras" of each machine. On page 27, you'll see part number (#1) 1122 350 0817, which is the newer tank. If you scroll down, look at number 14 that has an asterisk, which
indicates a discontinued part for a previous machine, which gives the part number 1122 350 0816 and gives an arrow followed by the serial number of the last machine using that part (* X 39 176 185 (01.1998)
along with an approximate date.

That's the earlier "narrow" tank for the flat-top models.
