8hp is a minimum on those.
2" wood max

Ten hp would be better or tweak that motor some to get near nine hp. A sharp knife goes without saying. They dull fast with only one or two knives on the smaller models. Plus the blade material itself is chit and needs to be quenched to harden it. See your local blacksmith with the blade in hand. Use anti seize on all the new bolts inside the hopper area. Sugar, tannins can cause problems and moisture build up inside. Keep it dry and clean.

I guess I should have added that I have a older 10hp Troy Built that is a very solid unit but that I hate to use.
The engine is temperamental (Tecumseh)and bottom discharge is in my opinion just plain stupid.

Basically at this stage in my life I want something I can tow behind the WheelHorse and start with the push of a button.
AND has a side discharge.

I think you would be a lot happier with something like this:
https://www.jansenusa.com/product/wood-chipper-and-shredder-gts-2000pro-kohler/

Others may disagree, but I’ve had poor experiences with DR and BearCat chippers claiming better than basic homeowner capacity.

The premium names in this size class are Skarper and Haecksler, but those are well beyond your desired price range at $5-10k…

Just got a woodmax DC1260. I've only had a chance to run it once so far and it made short work of brush up to and including 4" diameter oak. Had to "burp" it with the 4"+ diameter stuff to keep from bogging, but overall from a performance factor, its ran well. Running the standard 13HP briggs instead of the vangard engine. They were out of stock when I placed the order for it.

You need the wheel extensions, however the ones I got were a stamped metal, half-a** welded thing that broke the first time I took it behind the ATV to the wood lot. Sent in a lot of pics of the broken extension to woodmax. Supposedly going back through their design department and will send new ones when available. I'll probably just make my own at this point.

Other than that, so far, very pleased with it.

For $1400 I would try to find a used Rotohoe or Kemp Model 8, the forerunners to this model, I have owned both:

Merry Mac Tow-Behind Wood Chipper/Shredder — 249cc Briggs & Stratton 1150 Series OHV Engine, 3 1/2in. Chipping Capacity, Model# 12PT1100M

https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_8253_8253

Try to find the one with a drum and "fingers" and not the flails. The flails tend to jam, a clutch is needed to make any real use of the shredder, which many have.

I bought a used SC-183 with a 22 HP Predator engine on it and fixed it up a bit. Now that devours 4" branches and shreds 1.5" stuff like no tomorrow.

https://www.mackissicchippers.com/hitochsh.html

In the 2nd picture, see that stump in the background, behind the trash cans? It chipped the branches from that large pine tree and another two smaller fir type trees, and some bushes in about 6 hours of flat out running. It is about 3x a chipper of the MerryMac ones (which I like a lot), and the MerryMac types (older versions) are about 2-3x the chipper then that Dr. Power one will be. Yes, I have had people, such as a climber, break the "shredder" like the Dr. Power by dropping in a big branch that should have been chipped. Snapped the flail shaft in 1/2. None of them, including the SC-183, come close to a 6" Veermer with hydraulic feed or a 9" Bearcat.

If you can wait, try buying a used chipper in November or December, that is when you can get a good deal, though I bought mine in the spring and drove something close to 200 to pick my used one up, it was a very fortunate find.

I think I might just not need the shredder option much so possibly just getting one of these instead.

this machine, the Jansen referenced above, and the woodmaxx 1260 are all essentially the same machines. They all have slightly different features. My opinion you would be far happier with the 13/14 horse power engine machines like the Jansen or woodmaxx. If you are set on sticking with detail k2 I’d go with the opc506

I had a woodmaxx 1260 that I used commercially as an arborist. They will handle material up to about 4” diameter handily and are far more machine than the DR’s. I would expect the machine to handle home owner use for many many years.

I had one of these from Northern tool https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200673840_200673840. I always fed everything through the side chute, as my experience with the top load was a waste of time.

It treated me well, and when time to sell, went fast. I only had one repair needed to the belt cover shield, by beefing up the shield mounting tabs, and20190813_191525[1].jpg it was/is a known issue.
It does 3-3.5" easily, I found that taking the round spitback cover off let me feed branches in with the leaves attached fairly easily.

bearcat 5672 $5k I do not have much of a use for it any more , 20 hp honda hasn't been run in about 4 years always stored in side. I am 2nd owner . I ran a lot of buckthorn throught it-4"+ items green or dead dry no problem. ( thats some hard stuff) and I was chewing it down to the smallest particle out put, never a jam or hickup. It is in my shop in Milwaukee taking up space. When I got it, about 8 years ago the current new price was $8k. lx485@ hotmail.com
