given a Poulan 4218axv from a friend who didn't want/need it, and i needed a replacement saw it's fine for my needs at most once a year. I think it was used once then put back in its box, had to pull carb apart and blow out since it would not run more than 1-2 seconds, I now have adjusted and idling & running good.

but this carb on it, has a flange on front of carb which has what looks like a mechanical secondary on top of the carb... where only at 50% or more throttle does the mechanical linkage open the upper butterfly to let air thru into the intake. Is anyone familiar or knowledgeable about this, and could elaborate on what this Frankenstein setup is and why?

will try to post pic this evening, but for now the intake adapter thing is #530071889
and from ereplacement website they have this youtube vid which shows what i am asking about and can be seen within first 15 seconds:

It is a strato saw. The hole you are speaking of only flows fresh air and by design purges ex infront of the fuel charge.

A very very light coat of high temp rtv red goes well on those intake gaskets. Just rub on a dab between your finger tips. Transparent coating is just right. Use light pressure on the fasteners.

Sounds like you got a foot little saw! Are you going to kit the carb?
