Update:

So I took the covers off the saw and it is dirty as *f-word.
Damp sawdust everywhere.
There is a hole in the air filter and he has used women's tights to cover the air filter.
The spark plug was loose and looks like it never sparked.
The carb is filthy inside, full of bits of dust.
There is what looks like dust and pitch burned onto the top of the piston.
Having said all this there is no scoring on the piston or the cylinder.
Oh, and it leaks bar oil out of somewhere. Badly.

The bar oil leaking everywhere badly? This explains the first item on the list. Damp sawdust, which is everywhere.

I know you probably aren’t aware of this, but the saw produces dust & chips as it cuts. This dust mixes with the oil slung around by the saw and begins to stick to its various components.

You’re welcome. I’m sure that was helpful.
