After putting about 75 tanks through the 490, I figured it’s time to give it a proper review.
Pros:
1. Power- the saw was pretty weak for a 50cc saw in stock form. It struggled in hardwood >12”. That being said, it became a completely different saw after I took out the stovepipe tube and opened up the deflector, along with putting a 3/8LP rim on it. It now cuts about 50% faster, and it doesn’t bog down at all. It now easily outcuts the Stihl 290 and Husqvarna 455.
2. Weight- The saw is lighter than the equivalent Stihl and Husky, and it handles better too.
3. Build- It’s got a magnesium crankcase, rim sprocket, and old school controls. How many other $350 saws have that?
4. Ease of Starting- It starts in 3 pulls every time.
Cons:
1. B&C- My only issue with the saw is the cheap bar and chain on it. But you can just put a different better bar and chain on.
Overall:
For $350 this is the saw to get. With a simple muffler mod, retune, and 3/8LP rim it cuts like a proper 50cc saw. Don’t waste your time on the overpriced clamshell Stihl and Husky 50cc saws. Just get this
