The 044 is more likely 128 or 129 to start.

That’s an early 10mm 044. It probably has the angled hose barb for the impulse line.
I suspect the saw is old enough that stihl no longer has it in their system or it was never registered when it was sold new from the dealer.

It does have the angled bit for the impulse. Funny—This is the first 044 I’ve messed with (but have done several 046/460’s) & when I noticed the impulse, I thought, well, there’s an easy way to tell the difference. Didn’t know it changed. There were never 046’s w/ the angled impulse, were there? I believe my 046 is start of 2nd year they made them, and it has straight impulse.

More numbers come back invalid the you would think, even new stuff, dealers more times than not simply never register the equipment. I've also seen saws come back that were registered in the 80's so I doubt it's an age issue.[emoji111]

That is an early 044. I have some questions for you if you don't mind:

1) Is the 044 black or red lever, and are the recoil bolts 4 or 5 mm?

2) Is the 046 a D cylinder? It is in that range when I'm not sure.

Thanks.

I know some of the early 044s (SN 120******) have a metal plate in the recoil covering the spring that the later saws do not have. This saw is also black lever and has 4 mm starter bolts.

The 10 mm 044 I purchased new in Dec 1992 is SN 126******. It is a Red Lever saw with a KS P+C, and has the larger 5 mm starter bolts. It is a very good runner.

You will also notice that in later years, the SN is in the opposite direction. (Maybe so it is easier to read when the saw is together).

I thought they may be the smaller ones. Coulda driven ya crazy tryin to put the later 5 mm bolts in!

Thanks for the info, I'm always trying to learn!

Dang that thing came from all the way on the other side of Nashvegas!!

Took an hour in the kitchen sink & a couple spins through the USC, but I think the 044 cases cleaned up pretty well:

Nice job on the clean up, looking good!

I agree, and if you don't have one those Raisman 20" bars from HL Supply are pretty light, very cheap, and have a nice wide nose, perfect for an 044.

I got a wide nose (.063 ga) on a 046 I purchased from out west. I use it for milling on the 066/660s, but also great for the 046.

My 20" bars are now all .050 ga, but my 24/25 and 28" are all .063 ga.
