It’s an 046 cover. The plastic badge has been replaced with a blank metal badge at some point in this saws life.

It is an early model 046. It has a 1309 coil a walbro HD8 carb.
When I had this saw on my bench I replaced the intake manifold and the sleeve with new oem. I believe I also put a new ngk spark plug in it.

I was told once that 046s never came with a metal badge. I didn't believe it so I went googling. I didn't find one.

It didn't - the 046 was introduced in North America in the summer of 1996, and Stihl had updated the 066 and 044 to follow suit. All came with plastic model badge from then on. That was also when
the short-case poly flywheel 066 came out and they discontinued the metal flywheel 066. It was also when the 044 got the updated flywheel and carburetor.
