What’s up guys, so I got a couple of big pieces of what I believe to be blue gum eucalyptus in my last load of firewood which have burls on them. I put some feelers out there and sure enough they are worth some money. Problem is it is my first time doing this and I don’t know how much they are worth. I don’t want to be taken advantage of, but I do want to be fair. Also if I keep getting mill able stuff in my loads I can keep going through the same guy and hopefully create a relationship out of it. A selling relationship, not a love story, this ain’t hallmark. Here are some pics and all help and prices would be appreciated thank you.

This one is about 5’ wide and 4’ top to bottom on the burl, The width on the cut, or bottom, is 82” and the height is 67” the way it sits.

Lots of potential there, but you won’t really know what you have until you slab them. Grain is guaranteed to be cool, but real value will ultimately be dictated by the presence or absence of figure in addition to the auxin swirls.

If your hope is to just slice em off the logs and sell to a local slab broker with a mill, do it knowing you’ll be leaving most of your potential windfall on the table.

Could only be worth a couple hundred each 10/4 slab, but if you get some Birdseye, lots of flame, or other particularly freaky figure and you can successfully dry and surface them, the value should easily be $1-2k each, I would guess.

Be warned, though, even same day fresh cut Eucalyptus globulus tends to be pretty brutal on ripping chain. Janka hardness is over 2k, often has interlocking grain, and once it dries it hardens steel-like. Those big chonks you have look like they may have been down for a while, so be ready to sharpen thoroughly after each cut...

The dimensions mean most common bandsaw mills aren’t going to be up to the task, but I would still ask around if there is a wider capacity one lurking anywhere local whose owner could be convinced to do it for you.

Also, all the eucalyptus species I have milled have been notably unstable and pretty much guaranteed to warp and check if I don’t immediately Anchorseal, sticker, and then ratchet strap the stacks.
