Is this a good deal? Been watching for a decent breaker/spinner set for my bench, don’t want to break the bank as I don’t figure I’ll use it enough. I’ve got an old Nielsen 100B sharpener that I like, but having a good second one wouldn’t hurt. That one looks a little sketchy, although it does look like a metal body. Don’t know what brand that breaker and spinner are, or if I could get replacement parts.

For 50 bucks, I'd say that's a deal. That's half of a cheap new spinner and breaker, and that's not counting the sharpener.

Those look like old school Oregon or STIHL spinner and breaker, which you should still be able to get parts (breaker punches, spinning anvils, etc., so it could be a good deal if they move smoothly or clean up well.

I messaged the guy, but he said he had already sold them, just hadnt taken down the listing. :(

If I dont come across a good deal on a set soon, I may end up breaking down and getting a Harbor Freight one, seems like the general consensus is while they have issues, they are usable.

I like the adjustable breaker anvils. They make it easy to adjust to any pitch or brand chain, even those with worn tie straps.

That said, I am happy to use a slotted anvil too, if that is what I have.

That's not a bad looking deal, I'll keep that in mind when I decide to get a set. I'd think having both the adjustable and a slotted would be useful for different situations.

This thread, on 'another site' goes back to when I started playing around with a spinner and breaker:
https://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/baileys-chain-breaker-and-spinner.144859/

I can't emphasize enough that it is more than tool to save you a few dollars when making up loops from a bulk roll (often, the loops are cheaper when on sale!). It lets me repair, loops, resize loops, fit non-standard bars, buy a chain that is 'close enough' when others are not available, etc. It really helps you understand all the nuances and differences between different chains - if you are into that kind of stuff!

It also shows some of the anvils I tried, including an improvised one. Even tried using the adjustable jaws of a Crescent wrench (it did not work because mine were tapered). I like the idea of the 'automatic' (spring loaded) anvil, but did not have good results with it, especially on smaller pitch chains.

I think Piltz is selling an all in one hand held version, is it any good?

There is the Granberg 'Break-N-Mend': a modified Vice-Grips tool, which has been around forever.

I can use it if I have to, but many guys have difficulty with it.

My preferences are the Tecomec one mentioned, or the Bailey's set I have.

Oregon also sells a heavy duty set for harvester chain ($300 for a set?). And there is an electric spinner in the $400 - $500 range that I would consider if I ran a shop (or found cheap at an auction/ estate sale/ etc. ).
