What you do with gum lumber?

I have a tulip poplar with a large crotch that might have something good in there. Too bad I don't have a BIL lol.

Beautiful grain in them slabs. All of them. I didn't think I'd like the popular but after seeing the pics, it's not to shabby.
What size mill is that? Looks like 4 feet....
Yep, 48”. I do have 42” b/c but didn’t need the extra width. We did slightly trim the the largest log.

He originally thought it was American chestnut, that’s why we milled it but someone thought otherwise so he used that app w/ a picture of a leaf and found it to be b-gum.

Did it smell kinda “sweet” and was it fairly soft to mill?

No pro here, but it kinda looks like black walnut.

Edit: The leaf is wrong for walnut, bark too. Pretty wood though

Very soft, like the poplar. Here’s his leaf pic.

Walnut has a very distinct smell and it definitely wasn’t that. I wish it was!

It can be quite nice.
Nice work! I like the bar tabletop idea with the gum.

I was blown away at how much the new loops stretched. At one point DL’s started skipping on the rim!

You NEED an auxillary oiler.
Doesnt matter how wide the cut !!
Absolutely helps extend chain life
CALL ME OUT ON THIS !!!
I've milled a bunch, chains last longer with auxillary oil added at the end of the bar !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol, don’t need to call out that, I know it’s advantages. When I milled w/ the 50” I had oil out there. Typically after each cut, the saw gets revved high enough to spin the chain to get it full of oil. Only thing I call out is used motor oil and veg for lube. Wait.. no... :smash2:

I’d also like a winch!

Doesnt matter what length bar, aux oiler helps because it oils the part of the chain that does the work

I'll sell you my winch
I installed it and havent used it, not once
Sharp chain, good saw, no winch needed

If I have some slope, I’m good but the real big stuff I get worn out on. Lmk how much, might take that off your hands if ya don’t want it.

I’ve never used one. @PA Dan How far down on a log can it be used?

It was cheap and an easy install for my on my T slots. All my cuts take two people as I don’t have an automatic aux oiler and until the last 3 slabs didn’t have the wench. It really helps keep feed pressure constant. The stretch in the paracord was helpful.

How far down on a log can it be used?

if you give it a little thought, all the way down. I will be adding a wenching point to the end of my 12’ ladder. Screw it down with two screw and you are all set. If the ladder sticks off the end of the log it really helps keep the mill flat for the las few inches. I had a set of 3 slabs that the last 6-12” I had to throw out.
