When reading about bars for Stihl saws I run into big mount vs small mount

There are actually three sizes for stihl saws that I know of. 3005 is for smaller saws below the ms250, the medium 3003 mount goes from ms260 to the ms661, and 3002 fits the 880 and some older larger saws

Thanks for that.
I admit I don't know the numbers to watch for.
But if I was shopping for 044 or 660 Stihl I assume I would want the big mount

You would want the medium mount 3003, like Kevin said, for the 044 and 660.
If you’re shopping for Oregon bars their version of 3003 is called D025.

And if you're looking at unmarked used bars the slot width you want is 12.1mm

Or get a big ass file and open up a 9 or 10mm to 12mm in the slot. Takes a bit of time and patience with a new file. Lay a tape line if your not scribing one out on the steel.
If the oil feed hole matches, great. If not they are tough to drill in good bar steel. Better methods can be found. My dual mount Sugi lw is a prime example of a bar that fits many mounts with two sets of different spaced adjuster holes. Adapters can be used to reduce the slot width, sleeves or spring rings.

The big mounts are 14mm long slot. Some do have dual adjust holes for 090 and such beasts.

Slotted adjuster holes can be found on Oregon and other bars made to fit several mounts.

Pay close attention to sprocket nose tooth count and the bar gauge.
