I’d like to replace a front sight and I’d rather not buy one to do one sight.

You need a good staking tool to secure the sight.
The 1911 will throw a sight real quick if it is not solid.
The larger the sight = more mass and more force to help it fly out.

We would stake them in then silver solder.

I would find a local smith to do it possible. I tried twice, lost good front sights both times. I learned it is better to spend the money to have it done or buy the sights from them and maybe they will install for free.

Sorry guy I just saw replies. I wish there was a decent Smith around here. There are a few I could send the slide to but I’m hesitant to mail it.

You may want to look up a list of FFL holders in your area. Many/most gunsmiths don't advertise at all, and the FFL list will identify them as such. There are a few really good ones here who operate strictly on word of mouth.
