Any Reason I Shouldn't Put An .050 Chain On a Stihl MS 180?

Need to know if there are any drawbacks to doing this. The little chain probably cut well enough for what I use it for but in my experience it is not very durable. It's not easy to hand sharpen for me either.

It's got a 12 inch bar as well. I'd like to move up to a 14 inch at least but I worry about using up any power with a bigger chain and a bigger bar.

Thanks in advance.

No, just make sure chain pitch is correct for your saw. Drive sprocket, chain sprocket and chain must all match.

Just remember both chain and bar must match. Pitch and gauge.

Also if changing pitches a new clutch drum.

I believe the "stock" set up is 3/8 picco aka low profile with. 043 Guage. This chain is puny. Upgrade to .050 Guage requires new chain and bar. You do NOT need to change the sprocket drum bc pitch is still 3/8 low profile. 14" bar is good setup. Will be 50 dl.
I run this on MS 170. Works great.
See the comparison between..043 ga. and .50 ga. Chain, rivets, teeth are all better and longer between sharpening.

Wow. I can’t believe there is that much difference just from changing from .043 to .050.

Yes .007" is a lot difference. Even when you change between .058" and .063" there can problems and that is only .005"
