Crossbow season is definitely the premier time of year to be hunting for deer.
Been awhile since I've toted a crossbow.

I went to Black powder only about 15 years ago.
.50. Cal is the way to roll.
A lot less crowded also.

Crossbows are the most frustrating to me.

Make an air cannon. Works great for shooting a throw bag.

I wonder if one could shoot a barbed bolt into a small tree to pull it over. While back we were doing a bunch of small trees and the throw bag was a tedious pain.

For best performance the barbs would need to deploy only when something tries to pull it out, so they can be extra large and really sink in. Extraction after use would be a problem, and you would need to be able to disconnect from it to use another arrow if the first one hits in a bad spot.

I don’t believe an arrow would work in that respect. However I shoot a small rope through the top with an arrow

I saw a fellow on YT doing penetration testing into wood and he had a hard time getting the heads back out. Maybe if they were very coarse threaded one could unscrew them.

If you could make an extra long arrowhead, so the shaft doesn't reach the wood and can be unscrewed from the head, then you can cut a thin slice around the arrowhead and split the wood off of it. In that case even small barbs should be fine, like cones or something you would find on plastic screw anchors. The very tip of the arrowhead might best be rounded and not very sharp for best penetration, otherwise a long sharp point will just add surface area for friction. I think that is why round nose pellets penetrate so deep compared to the sharp pointed ones.

I'm thinking about upgrading my crossbow and like the looks of the Excalibur Matrix G340. I'm a strictly recurve kinda guy. Anybody know about this one? You can get the complete package for around 5 bills.
