After reading and studying I finally scrounged up the parts and finished murdering this poor 460 cylinder per mostly CFB & Masterminds builds. built a ghetto cutter (old cylinder with a piece of file slotted in to cut squish. got carried away and had to take .05 off the base so I have a teeny bit of freeport, but final #s are .018 squish, 80, 102 and 120 flat. Lots of compression, needs that husky decomp, what a nasty beast. Waiting on some woodruff keys tomorrow to get a more precise advance -.025) and then some test cuts. Feels like its gonna be one hell of a saw from the piss revving so far.

@huskihl have any input regarding hyway rings? Thanks.
Never used them, myself. But I remember back when others were talking about them and they thought they were acceptable. My guess is that they aren’t going to last like a Caber, but that’s subjective and just personal opinion

I built a ported 044 (78/102/122) with a 100% Hyway top end and it’s been holding up really well so far, a year and a half of falling and bucking firewood with a 32” on it.

Didn’t delete the gasket so it has way more squish than your saw, but it tested at 180-185 compression a couple months ago and the bore looks good.

I use caber rings now that I know better, but that 100% hyway upper is holding up.

So I finally am goung to start using a piston stop and a torque wrench after 3 sheared cranks and 4 or more spun flywheels. This was a new one, after the flywheel spun on the first run and I though it had hung a ring or dynamited, when I reset the flywheel and restarted it wouldnt run with the brake on.... cause the clutch unthreaded against the drum. Had to cut the c clip out with the grinder.

Should be able to engage the brake while it’s running and it will thread back on tight.
For next time

Thanks, you are a genius sir. It was ver ver tight and I stripped it before I figured it out. I did stop it dead twice with the brake, Hopefully there wont be a next time usin that thar fancy torque wrench and piston stop, but I think nothings safe once your north of 220 psi?

I’m not certain. I bump them snug with a 1/4 inch impact. But I put a bar and chain on them when I run them and with the chain moving slowly I set the brake a couple times. I’ve never had one come off that had a bar and chain on it

Mine come off when Im an idiot, piss revving and the flywheel shears( cause its not clean and dry or torqued) and the sudden stop does me in. Maybe I like the sense of relief that it wasnt a hung ring or forgotten circlip turning things into high flow paperweights! I will try and be patient and put a bar and chain on next time fasho.

I assume you used a old piston to cut squish not the old jug? Also i dont torque flywheel or clutches on saws. Never had a issue with a flywheel except with a 7 hp briggs and a friction ball starter. Ive sheered it twice after i fixed the points.

As Kev mentioned the compression of engine and a .25” impact is all you need but if you are hell bent on doing by hand wind a piece of rope inside cyl instead of piston stop.
But ive had 3 cranks shear trying to be gentle with the little dewalt impact and thats a super expensive pita. Ill defintely use rope to avoid fing the piston. I do have a nice lead stop that goes in the squish band though, feels safeish.

yep. Old piston with file tail in groove.
