I just want to leave this here. Be careful with this gilardoni garbage. Port numbers varies up to 3 degrees and ring of death varies from one side to the other. There is discussion on fb on this saws jug cannot be lowered. I think some can and others not. Take measurements all around the band.
But this is not the main reason I'm writing this. While measuring nikasil I found cracked plating. Brand new saw. Wtf?

Here are measurments of the ring. You can see how inconsistent it is

@jurchybald There is a difference between a "ring of death" at the top of the cylinder and the plated bore being slightly large such that the hone didn't touch it. The picture shown above doesn't appear to have a distinct ridge to it. If you push a ring up into the bore, does the end gap increase once the ring is near the squish band? As for the plating defect, I hope you can get a warranty claim on that.

Sounds to me like someone needs to take a mechanics pick or something similar and see if this area can be scratched or not to confirm or deny. If it's plated it surely will not.

Thats ugly.
@huskihl did you have any issues lowering yours?
No bad spots or pits like shown. I wouldn’t actually worry too much about them anyway as long as it’s solid around it. They will likely fill in with carbon and not cause any issues.

There are some discrepancies about the height of the plating causing a ring of death. I chased the plating almost all the way to the band with the boring bar. Most saws increase in bore size about .005” the last .030” or so of vertical travel before you get to the band, but there is still plating there from what I’ve seen in most saws. 026 is different, as there was an actual ring of death where the plating ended for .100” or so south of the band. On the 564, cutter is still squealing on the plating, so 🤷🏽‍♂️

Not like a pig I hope. Lol

Seriously though, the casting void isn't a big issue as you pointed out, unless it bleeds off compression, there should be enough past it to build enough even if it did some. Then there's the vertical line in the plating next to the metal rule might be troublesome, if it indeed is what it looks to be, honed through the plating. Pictures being what they are though, this could be nothing as well.
Still trying to figure out it going from a normal looking cylinder wall to a thin shiny ring, then to the thicker dark ring underneath. It's no wonder it has folks all in a twit over it just from the looks of it, as it is quite a strange thing to see.

Not really certain why they are like that either. Nearest I can figure is it’s in the plating process. You know how powder coat doesn’t cover well on corners? Anything steel with a sharp corner or an edge always rusts through relatively quickly. Wondering maybe if it’s similar with the plating process. Once they get close to the squish band it doesn’t get applied as heavily?
No idea how it applied, just spitballing. Doesn’t make any sense that they would bore the cylinder larger in that upper area

From a purely qc standpoint, there’s a lot to be desired. Randy poasted a 540 cylinder on fb that he literally blew the plating off with an air hose. Flake looked to be about the size of a quarter. Seems like the clones are getting better and the big dogs are getting worse

Mahle made good stuff…and so did KS. Not so sure about who Husky is in bed with now. Kinda reminds me of Hyway & Meteor plating.

I know the 543 is a Zenoah and they are either made in-house or by someone that we aren’t as familiar with. They are just different. Not certain if the one Randy did was a 540 or 543.
The 540 says made in Sweden but it sure seems to have Japanese influence inside
