Have been running a Modded 440 for a little while and was itching to see what a modded 500i could do.
A while back I sold some stuff and a few months ago ordered a monkeyed 500i. Had a chance to run the 500i today.

Empty weights: the 440 PHO, was 14 lbs 3 oz. The 500i I have is 14 lbs 7 oz., PHO.

First impressions: The 500i has a little more grunt and amazing throttle response. The modded 440 is no slouch, but the 500i reminded me pretty quickly I'd better be paying attention and hang on! I tend to be aggressive on taking down the rakers and will be a little more conservative in the future.

Oiler adjusted to max oils great.
Both saws are quite nose heavy with a 24" GB Ti bar so it's time to break out the light bar.
Gunning sites are clean and no problems transitioning to the new saw.

I think my new 2 saw plan is the 500i and a modded 261. Put the 440 in a box on the shelf when I got home.

The 500i lists at 14 lb dry weight and produces just under 7 Hp. Rather amazing in my book. High tech all the way and expensive. You get what you pay for.

But, I still like my 441c-m that I rebuilt after a company burned it out gave it to me for peanuts. Mine is very dependable and not as powerful by any means but a good rebuilt saw that I intend to keep.

I had an early 441. Regular Carb. Fantastic saw.
Other than maintenance parts and needing firmer antivibe bushings, it gave me zero issues over lots of years of light logging and firewood duties.
Most of the time it wore a 24" bar and a few times a 32 incher and full comp. Pulled it just fine.
It's the saw in my avatar.
Here are some pics of the old girl just before I sold it to a friend.

Across the river from Harrisburg.

The 500i sort of reminds me of a 660 I once had for a brief stint. The 660 had a Bailey's big bore kit in it. I watched it throw a guy backwards and sit him on the ground.
I thought I lost the sale, but he bought the saw. He told me he was an arborist, so I figured he knew what he was getting in to.

Here are some pics of the first field trip with the 440. Her big bottomed sister was my main saw at the time.

Lots of comments about the 440 vs 441 back in the day and I wanted to see what all the hooplah was about. The 440 ended up getting bananas but the 441 was a good runner from the get go. If she'd had some port work, I don't think little sister could have kept up.

Don’t stuff the 440 away in a box…I’ll take it off your hands! :D

I understand... that 440 was the first "big" saw I had ported. I don't have any plans on letting it go for a while.
If the 500i would be better on fuel and a touch lighter, maybe. That thing is a gas guzzler. Sure looks good, but my oh my is it thirsty!

440 is up there with one of the best for power to weight. It’s amazing it’s taken so long to defeat it. 441’s we’re pretty good runners but I’d take a 440 any day just for the ease of repairs lol. I don’t run it much but my ported 460 is a great saw.

Ditch the 261 and go 400. 400 plus 500 is the perfect pair.

The 500i has great displacement/power to weight, but I really like my ported 462s. A little lighter, more fuel efficient and they have the clean air filter tech.

Excellent throttle response, and very fast cutters. When I need more torque, I break out my MOFO Hybrid, it pulls like a mule!

I really like the 461 and 462 saws. Kicked them around for a while. I get into some decent sized wood every now and then and wanted to take some of the pressure off the 440 when running a 32" bar. I've got to admit, the lines on the 500i are sharp.

Here's some of the bigger wood. Red Oak. 6' bucket on the tractor. Rounds are just under 5'.

Quite a nifty noodling stand you have there.
I made those, a pair, one for each side, about 7 years ago. Yes, they do work and I wish I could remember to bring them with me in the truck. Scrambling around looking for three or four small chunk supports is no fun. There was a time when woodworking and trim carpentry were my favorite hobbies. That changed a bit.

I'm just on the other side of the river from you between Hershey and Lebanon. Good to see a local guy.
