I am working on an older echo that has points, I've never really worked on one of these before. I've tried to file them but they keep fouling out. Does anyone know the correct gap for the points, also how does one go about adjusting the gap?

I'm not sure..but I'd try .015"

Should be two screws that hold the point set on the timing plate. Loosen them about a quarter to half a turn. Then find the lobe on the crank by rotating the end of the crank. At the preak of the lobe you set the gap by sliding the point set to where there is slight resistance on a feeler gauge. Then i always spray some starting fluid or other solvent that flashes quickly and cleanly to spray them off. Points need to be dead clean.

Thank you. I do have spark, if I take it in a dark room and turn it over with my tester in it will show spark, but I'm not sure if it's weak. It will hit in carb cleaner but won't run. I rebuilt the carburetor and set the metering lever. It is getting fuel but I can't tell if it's flooding because of the carb or from weak spark.

The needles on the carb are set one turn out each.

Does your saw have the high idle catch on the handle still. Mine no longer has it so when it's cold and first start I have to turn the idle up alot for it to start on its own. If not I have to shoot mix in her a couple times and catch the throttle quick.

you try a different plug? sometimes they will fire in open air but under compression they wont fire.
and go to the dollar store and get a finger nail file because sand paper is a no no when it comes to cleaning points.

Thanks for the offer, this isnt my saw, it's @GoBigBlue1984 s saw. He has been busy and hasn't had time to mess with it and the points setup kinda intrigued me, well the intrigue is over. If you had the actual conversion kit to make this an electronic ignition setup he might be interested. Maybe a known working carb so we can eliminate that issue.Other than that it's actually a complete and pretty good shape for it's age saw. But any part needs to be his decision.

Be glad it has the points. If it was a mid 80's electronic ignition Echo... when they die they are dead. Finding parts is almost impossible.

I decided to do the poor man's spark test, opened the gap on the spark plug at wide as I could and took a lead wire and grounded it, it blew a spark pretty as you like. I broke down and vac and pressure tested it. It passed, I checked the intake block and it was free of cracks and the passage was clear. However it is not getting fuel. I can take the fuel line off with it on it's side and fuel will not flow out of the tank, if I crack the lid it will start to flow. I'm not sure how these are supposed to work so I don't know if the vent is bad. It has a new kit in the carb and the metering lever is set right. This thing is frustrating me now.

sound like the fuel cap vent is plugged try blowing the cap out with compressed air.
