Do you use a 3/8 file on a 404 chain. I got a Stihl 2n1 3/8 sharpener. If I can’t use the 3/8 can someone point me in the right Direction for a sharpener. Thanks

You can use a 7/32th file but in order to get the side plate angle and gullet deapth I use a 1/4" file.

Both Oregon and STIHL call for 7/32 inch (5.5 mm) files for .404 for chain, on the charts that I have.

Pferd has their Chain Sharp CS-X model 2-in-1 file guide: STIHL does not appear to have one that large.

Does not work on skip tooth chain.

The basic Oregon file guide is also available for 10 bucks or so on Amazon.

I bought a couple of those for chainsaw class , new users had difficulty setting them up. To much hand pressure made the file pop out also. Just fyi

Im sorry Philbert , I should've clarified that I free hand.
I think you could probably get a 1/4 in a guide though? Anything can be overcome with strength and ignorance!

There sure is a lot to know about chain sharpening. Can anyone recommend a video on chain sharpening?

There’s plenty of videos on YouTube just search chainsaw filing or sharpening, but the best thing is to experience it urself and learn for ur mistakes and progress as you get more time on the filing.

The biggest thing that confused me when I first started sharpening chain was the file doesn’t really fit the tooth when you start on a new chain. A file does not match the grind on the tooth that comes from the factory. So you gotta make a few swipes to get the file “in there”. After that just nice straight strokes at the angle or close to the angle the tooth is originally shaped will get you started in the right direction.

Right.

So, one advantage of a chain grinder, using standard aluminum-oxide wheels, is that you can profile the edge of the wheel to obtain a specific cutter profile.

A related issue is when the same chain is sometimes sharpened on a grinder (at home), and sometimes sharpened with a file (in the field). You want those profiles to match, so that you are not wasting time and cutter material, each time, getting the tool to seat.

Grind as you file; file as you grind!’ -

Dolmar, Makita, Oregon, Husqvarna specify a 5.5mm file for full chisel 3/8" chain.
Some of them recommend using a 4.8mm file once the chains half life is reached.

Stihl just specifies a 5.2mm file throughout a 3/8" chains lifecycle.

I tried 5.2mm on 3/8" chains and didn't like it.
