Built 2 361’s yesterday and didn't go as planned.

The first saw has been a oddball since the day I met it. It’s a 361 but has 341 written all over it.

It is NIB with open transfers, an odd muffler with a different internal baffle with no screen provision and I believe a limited coil.

My fast tach couldn’t read over 11500 on the thing. It oddly would read 11800, then bounce back to under 11500.

The saw ran well and to my ears at least, was turning better than 11k. It held 11k in the wood with a 20” bar and 3/8 Stihl RS/7pin.

Has to be a limited coil.

Here is where the limited comes into play, I believe.

Certainly odd. I tuned it in wood at the end because it always sounded “fat” no matter where the H screw was to a point.

Sounds kinda lean in the cut in retrospect. It was slower with less power fattened up though.

There is no word in the documentation of a limited ignition module. (Also the newer 1135 400 1308) High speed should be 14.000 rpm on the MS 361. Check your tach, maybe it`s malfunctioning.

Second saw fitted with 044 carb and boot. Tried an 064 impulse line, but it cracked on assembly.

Awaiting oem 1128 impulse lines to try, so I just used the stock 361 line through the factory hole.

Carb required both shafts being swapped out and the linkage rod to be persuaded.

Unfortunately, after all that work I can’t get the carb to lean out. The H screw is bottomed out. Had to throw in the towel for the day.

The carb was gone through and was pressure tested. It held over 30 psi without popping off. I have to pull it and play with it later.

With the H all the way in, and the L set at 1 turn out, the most I could get was 10,500. It’s fat as hell, unlike the other limited saw. The sound is unmistakable.

Could be for certain.

DonnyBoy has a YouTube video of a rev limited 361 coil malfunctioning. I couldn’t find any info either about a limited version.

That`s the newer Zama C3R-S236. The older version with closed transfer ports has a Walbro HD 34.
It has extended adjustment screws with cylindrical limiters that stopped on a cast boss that came out between them.

The walbro has the cast shroud with the recessed screws.

I didn’t catch the make of the 361 carb as it was going back in anyway.

If the coil isn’t limited it must be my tach. It’s still 4 stroking, but there is no way that’s 11500 to my ears at least.
