Figured id toss a build thread in here. We need more of them.

A friend asked me to port a 361 for him. He hadn’t run the saw yet, he purchased it and sent right to me.

Beautiful saw. I actually asked to purchase it but was declined.

The fact that it’s an Arctic made it more difficult to do. It’s finally there and I hope to run it today.

The 361 Stihl done up correctly is a true one saw plan. Adding a 460 oiler makes it able to pull a 16-28” bar and oil it well. I’ll be testing it with a 28 later. Vids to follow.

So without further ado, here we go.

Worst muffler in existence. A Husky 562 comes close.

The entire thing needs to be heated, pryed open, have the inner terribly restrictive baffle removed, and put back together. Honestly, I hate these fùcking things. 7A84BAEE-5F3D-4E89-A66E-6E74DFBA7850.jpeg1DAD49BA-08D2-41C7-815E-47866F07F8E7.jpegDC2F7F2C-B6EC-488B-B07D-DB40C9A747E8.jpegFC2AABDE-6AE5-4DB0-ABB7-059BA4F77992.jpeg5922A093-9CAF-426D-A9B8-57DFFD4A04F1.jpeg

next is adding a HD17 044 carb. The throttle plate on the 044/361 carb are the same, but the choke butterfly and venturi are much bigger on the 044 carb. The swap requires a lot of work. The impulse line needs to swapped out to a 029/039 line. There is a factory hole in the tank for it (interestingly enough). The pump side plate stays on the HD17, the metering plate has to be swapped. The limiters trimmed.

The choke shafts need to be swapped. The Choke plate won’t fit on the 361 shaft, so the shaft needs to be filed at both ends to accept it. I use red Loctite on the plate retaining screw and let it set for 24 hours.

By far, the worst part of the build is making a custom linkage wire for the throttle. The stocker won’t work because of the HD17 impulse line. One can’t swap the 044 impulse out to forward facing because no boot existed except for the 361 (which has a tiny exit). I’ve tried 038 and 036 boots. They are either just as small as the 361 exit or are in a different rotation. I may try cutting off the 361 boot impulse tab and adding Dirko to the interface of the 044 boot at some point, because making the linkage just sucks. It was event worse this time because is the rear handle wiring.

What's the difference between the impulse on the carbs? Is it that the HD17 is more offset? I couldn't tell from the pics.

The 361 impulse is on the face. Stock, the 361 is like an 036. It’s a regular line that attaches to a 90* nipple near the intake boot opening in the tank. The 044 is on the pump side with an elbow.

I‘m all ears if someone can tell me a better way to do it.
