new chains all 114dl (some had to be piss rev'd on 8pin to stretch, so they would fit on 9pin)
36" tsumura bar

to determine if I could run 9pin I ran stihl full comp RS 8pin and 9pin. 9pin was .6 slower than 8pin on the full comp...almost had enough guts to do 9 full comp faster. Anyway, so I figured full skip and half/semi skip would be best on 9, and full comp best on 8.

9 pin + Stihl RSF rapid super full skip round ground

8pin + oregon full comp square ground

8pin + stihl rs rapid super full comp round ground

9pin + stihl RS custom half skip (took apart an RS and remade it into semi skip)

9pin + stihl RSLH square ground semi/ half skip

9pin + oregon half skip square

9pin + oregon full skip square

Thanks for doing this for us! Which run felt better or smoother as far as chain went? That saw is a real buzz saw. Runs great!

The semi skip cuts sounded the easiest to keep cutting the best. Full comp was loading it more almost down too far.

How come you don't keep any of it? Do you use a 32" bar on any of your saws?

Lol. I just realized your test was 36, not 32. Lol. I feel dumb. Sorry for the confusion.

I give all you guys who square file a lot of credit. I am only really set up for round filing. I do not have the patience or the time to square file for only gaining a few seconds per cut.
For the type and amount of cutting that I do, round filing is more than adequate.

Once you get the feel of the filing down. Its really not that much more time than round for me. I have seen others file square faster than some do round.

Is it all done freehand? Or is there a guide like the round file setups?

I think most guys on here sharpen by hand. I do not have a grinder, nor do I plan on getting one. Just not financially feasible for me.

I consider myself to be descent square filer. I mean I'm no where's near the skill level of Mike Lee or John Reilly. But I can free hand file a 20 inch bar in around 10 minutes. I file my square where I need a little more aggressive raker than most so it doesn't stay sharp as long but it still cuts good and smooth but needs a strong saw like my stihl ms 441 rcm Alan ported to pull it.
