I went through with a flap wheel afterwards and smoothed the links and rivets out

I'd like to try a chamfer on top of the straps rather than dog boning

Yeah, I think a lot of it is being able to clear the chips. Rakers are another, the raker gauges I have are too hungry

I use feeler gauges and a straightedge. I haven't checked lately, but I'd guess you'd want something like .018"
