I understand that there are several other Husky saws that can share parts with my beloved 254. While being ported by @huskihl, he mentioned the clutch cover could use being replaced.

Are there other clutch covers that will fit will on a 254?? I believe mine was made in 1989.

Also, what are my carb options? Right now it seems the stock carb is working well with the awesome work Kevin did, but if I wanted to squeeze more out he said the carb would be the place to start. Are there other carb combinations that can be modified to work on the 254?

Any wisdom y'all can share is much appreciated.

Blessings,
-Will

You’d be looking at 262/261/257/154
for clutch cover and easy carb swap options.

The clutch needed replacement. Not the cover

A 262xp carburetor makes for an easy swap with good performance on the 254.

I’d like to know if a 262 air filter elbow is larger than the 254. The elbow for this smaller carburetor would then be holding it back if I put a larger carb on. In the past I have also swapped shafts into a 199 and that helped a little bit

The 254 Air filter can and should be wallered out with a rotary bit, as well as the adapter to get the same ID as the 198/199 bore. The intake and gasket should be done as well. Grind, measure, grind, measure...
To put a 120/144 in just the air filter needs opened up, nothing else, which is why I say it's the easiest swap to do.
Even if it is larger, the 262 adapter is a whole 'nother critter, not sure what it would take to get a filter on it at that point. You have some evil plan here?

No evil plan. I’ve only done 1 262 and 1 254 so I can’t remember if the 262 filtering system is similar

After some more remembering, the 254 and 262 carbs have the same bore diameter as each other, the venturi is where they differ at. Which may be why some 262's are fussy tuners with the lessened venturi effect those carbs have. At any rate I suspect the air filter adapters would be the same diameter, as the carbs are the same.

I can't help but wonder if the 550 and/or 562 clutch would work on the 254, those C spring clutches sure are smooth.
