HELP! 201c what causes melted bottom plastic pics included!!!

From what I looked up the muffler can come loose and cause this….guy wants 250 for it says runs but haven’t went and looked yet….i offered $200 he stuck on $250…

What ya boys think??

I would say that loose muffler or hole in muffler is a possibility. Might be running it leaner than 50:1 (eyeballing pouring in the mix oil instead of measuring) and it running hotter than normal. My MS 261 was run without oil and the muffler is now permanently blue, I am sure if there was plastic as close to it and enclosed like this 201 then it would have at least blackened it if not melted it.

It looks well used and is missing a screw on the recoil cover (near the break handle). Will be worth looking at the air filter/carb area to see how well that area is taken. Also checking chain movement could show any clutch issues.

I don't love top handle saws, so this would be an easy pass for me...lol

If it runs good, I would stick to your 200 offer. To fix the hole it would need a tank. And based on the pictures it will probably need a few more things.

Yeah, something is up with the muffler. Could just be running it with only one muffler bolt but it looks like there’s some sort of plate that shouldn’t be there so assume muffler and tank are roached. 201’s aren’t worth much anymore with the smaller saws being so good and the battery versions taking over. If it runs and cuts well, maybe $200.

Looks like a typical used tree service 201
The muffler bolts can loosen up and the muffler burns the floor of the tank. Depends on how bad the melting is...may or may not need a tank.
Bolt holes are usually boogered up when this happens so would need helicoils. Muffler may be damaged.
$200 is a generous offer

Ya ya a pass for me once looked into it more and the reply’s here, to much for what it is!!!!
