So I have been slowly upgrading my 89 V3500 cab and chassis to gear it towards tree work and small scale logging. It had 4 foot side board's when I bought it. We were loading firewood by hand and I cut the boards down to 2 feet to make it easier to hand load. I recently got a knuckle boom and decided to upgrade the truck for easier and safer loading and hauling logs. Its a 14' 6" flatbed. I took it to my dads place and we welded in some 4" square tubing bunks, 3' tall. Also welded on some 15k mbs strap hooks. Now its time to get loaded and get hauling. 20210417_145308_02.jpg 20210418_193522.jpg

I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone call a 6.2 Detroit awesome lol.

op neat old truck but I would think that long steel bed is already pretty heavy on a 1 ton, What’s the payload numbers?

You have to remember the 6.2 was designed for nothing but fuel economy. Indirect diesel V8s just have an amazing sound. Most gas engines of that era where nothing to brag about either.

I still have a soft spot for the ole 6.2 and 6.5. those diesels are the first diesel engines I owned in trucks. I'm a full blown Cummins guy now, but would love a 6.2 powered 80' s one and a quarter ton military pickup.. at one point I modded and drag raced those 6.2's. had a ats turboed one, and even a custom twin turbo setup with dual hood stacks! In a 80's 2 wd Chevy custom short box regular cab dually with super wide singles on the rear, it would do a 13 second quarter mile pass.

I lost interest of those engines after some major failure's. But I was pushing them to the limit for sure. My final straw was a 82 red block that was decked, o-ringed, studded top and bottom broke the starter mount ear off the block. I sold it for basically scrap price and then came along my first 12 valve Cummins powered Chevy, and the endless problems that it had lol.

10-4, Those 80s military 6.2s are still around out west. My brother is in Utah and see’s them for sale a bit. They have a name for them but I don’t remember it. My brother had a 90s 3/4 ton suburban with the 6.5 nicknamed the beast.

Side note speaking of Cummins, I’d love to rock a 4bt in my 97 ranger. It’s been done and not the easiest, cheapest or fastest but just something cool about it. I would imagine 200ish hp and 3-400 ft lbs of torque would be a lot of fun in that little truck.

We have a 4bt in our backhoe. One day if the hoe ever dies, it's going in my F150!

If Something like that was out here you wouldn’t get unloaded, heck they don’t unload a flat deck trailer with bunks.

Yea, none of the big Mills here will unload a pickup and or trailer. Only one small cedar mill near me that will unload a pickup using a forklift, they take 6'8" and 8 '6" logs up to 24 inch dia..

12’s is the shortest I’ve ever sent and even that is starting die, the tier system of pay along with average length of loads of 36’ have made it real fun to try to do anything short.
