I was digging through my local saw shop's stock of chain looking for a reel of 26rs pro (they lost their chainsaw mechanic, they're mostly doing plows and lawn equipment at this point), and came up with some left over 1/4 .050. Asked the counter girl what shed take for it, not that I needed it but it was so far in the back i figured hell why not ask. $30 for maybe 15-20' of chain, not bad. Anyways, I can't find a damn bar that fits this stuff. To be put on an echo top handle or stihl 201 or husqy t540ixp. Figure any bar will do, the tails all seem to be the same, drill a new adjuster hole. But where are the 1/4 .050 bars?? I keep finding .043, no luck with .050 (unless its a carving bar, dont know anything about them).

Thanks for any tips!

Don’t know anything about carving bars, are they built to handle removals in arb work?

carving bars are pointy ( small sprocket) and the chain has to be real loose on them
And they are not cheap

I wouldn't recommend a carving bar for general tree-trimming or removal work. They have a tiny tip and the kick back
potential is high with that style of bar (not that .250" pitch chain will produce a violent kick back). But if you're running
a top handle saw one-handed, it can be an issue.

I wouldn’t say they have to be real loose. Yea like any other hard nose bar you can’t run them snug like a sprocket nose bar, but not “real loose” either.

They have different size tips JJ. I have a couple carving bars here I will use. They are actually nice for precision pruning in small/tight unions.

I’m assuming what you have is 13rms which is specialty carving chain. You will need a carving bar like this:

Out of stock but should get you started down your google search path.

I’ve seen quite a few 1/4” .050 bars on ebay. I think Stihl had them on some of their older top handles.

On point, thanks for connecting a dot I overlooked. Shame on us climbers for one handing but also whatcha gonna do sometimes? So it goes. The loose chain thing would get me, I can see feathering a cut and it just binding up as well.

Pruning fruit trees and ornamentals, alright cool, yea I’d explore a cheap option. I see archer makes one for cheap, could try it out at that price

I was looking for 12/14” bars, most I’ve come across are 10”, I’m guessing this is like saw chain and consumer pole saw bars top out at 10”. Our stihl pole saw wears a 12 or 14” but runs 3/8 .043. Thinking I picked up some effectively useless chain unless I want a 10” bar. Or a carving bar. I’m giving that carving bar a thought for fine pruning ornamentals and fruit trees, might be a better finish than what a Zubat leaves?

Husqvarna do a 10" bar for their battery saws. Part number 575842258

Also found this Oregon 100SDAA041 bar, also 10", that fits lots of saws:

But couldn't you use any .050 gauge bar and then vary the number of drive links to suit?

I saw this bar, the drive link count wouldnt be the problem, I was looking for 12-14", certainly a 10" bar would be do able, figured with 1/4p one could reasonable run a longer bar.

Might have to do some fitment mods, but they’re out there.

Thanks for finding these, I did see that mcCulloch bar but the nose appeared quite wide relative to the single rivet 1/4p bars (not carving bars), like a standard rollo bar on a 201. Figured I'd lose the advantage of finer cuts nose cuts, that's a lot of overthinking on my end. Appreciate you sharing the links! @Philbert mentioned in another thread that the nose sprocket could always be changed on a 3/8p bar to 1/4p, makes a viable option as well.

Yeah, the wide nose really misses the point of short pitch chain. I wouldn’t shy away from a carving bar if you’re thinking fine pruning. All the small tip sprocket bars split at the tip pretty quickly.

Nose sprocket can physically be replaced, IF you can find the parts. But if the other sprocket is designed for a bar nose with a different radius, as well as chain pitch, it will not work.

I've run an 18" 3/8lp .050 on an ht 101. . . it cut just fine, I didn't like holding it up though. I kind of like 16" 3/8 lp .043 for them most of the time, more for reach than diameter.
