Ever seen a 026 pro without the large black washer between the clutch and worm gear? I went to mod the oil pump on my 026 and noticed it wasn't there.

I guess I need a new one?

Yes, yes you do.

Besides protecting the oil pump if a spring breaks at speed it contributes to the parts ‘stack’ so the oil pump drive spring will stay engaged to the notch in the clutch drum.

I just got three more from my dealer. Seems every other Stihl I get is missing that washer. [emoji57]

And to think 3 people ran that saw like that. Its a relatively low use saw too, but looks ugly on the outside. The oil pump appears to work, but output was low. Most saws jam the parts together without the washer there to stop the clutch. I guess I got lucky.

Are they all the same size? I have one from a 391 (1127 162 1000) instead of 1121 162 1001

My clutch has built in spring guards. Looks like there's 2 clutch versions. The 391 washer bound everything, so I'll just try the clutch alone.

Yes, you need it as said by Driver:

Hard to believe someone left it off. The 1127 162 1000 might work, and I imagine that is better than nothing.

So, what's up with part 5 vs part 4? Mine has part 5. The 391 washer pressed too hard on the worm gear. No washer leaves just enough clearance for all to work fine.

First time running it today since porting it months ago with doc's help. I didn't go as aggressive as he recommended, but it runs great and put a smile on my face. I'd have to run it against my muffler modded 550mkII to know where it stands as the 550 also impresses me for only having a muffler mod. I was impressed with it stock actually.

One more question. Is it common for gas to leak quickly out of the tank vent when tipped far enough? It's kind of annoying, but so is the classic problem with fuel loading up at idle and nearly stalling it when tipped.

That cover washer (part 7) is only needed when things go wrong with a spring or shoe. It helps stop other parts getting smashed in the advent of spring fatigue etc.

yes you can run it without a cover washer, but you will wish you had one when things go wrong, but then it’s to late o_O

you would be looking for a new worm gear and oil pump if the spring breaks and maybe damage to the case if the shoe breaks and gets loose.

also I believe the cover washer helps stop sawdust and bits getting into the clutch.

Pretty sure that there are 2 different clutch centers in the 026 and 036 (positive on the 036). One is thicker and takes up the space of the grenade washer (which is only there to protect the oil pump and case if clutch grenades).

I’m not sure whether or not any 026 PRO’s came without the washer, but the 026 certainly did come without the washer. It’s possible someone swapped the clutch or you have an early model.

How many exploded clutches have yinz seen? I haven’t seen too many.

Does your E clip still fit on with the washer installed?

That seems a bit much. Could be the tank vent needs servicing or replacing. Note there have been several designs offered through the years:

I've seen an oil pump come loose and get destroyed by the clutch in a 290, no clutch damage. Also the 391 I took the washer from had a clutch failure, and the washer did help, but the springs still damaged some parts of the oil system. A retainer clip is what had failed.

I have part 24 for the tank vent from what I remember seeing. No part 25 from what I remember.

I was referring to this red flapper valve. It fits inside tank and prevents fuel from leaking out.

Part #22:
View attachment 293724

Diagram does not show it inside the tank anywhere. Service manual may not even discuss it. Not sure about that.

So true. I put one in backwards first until I gave it some thought. [emoji90] Ripped the stem off taking it back out. [emoji2959][emoji2959][emoji2959]

It’s used as a fuel pump check in Holly carbs.

Stihl gets a hold up price for one.

Where does #22 go?

#22 & 28 are two different styles of umbrella check valve. Either one goes in the same spot.

Yeah, Stihl revised the tank vent four times. [emoji2960]

The 024 & 026 had a long run plus the MS260 can screw up a fellows head when you start out with a carcass of unknown lineage. [emoji848]

Where does #22 go?

PN 1110 353 1600 is the umbrella valve that goes up from inside the tank. Valve 2 in the description below #22 in the diagram posted above

PN 4114 353 1600 goes down from the top of the tank this is the valve with the hole through the center., Valve 1

From serial number X 36 348 620
• The previous vent valve (1) has
been replaced by valve (2).
The new valve only allows air to
enter the fuel tank.
To equalize pressure from the
inside outwards, always open
the tank cap slowly to release
pressure and ensure that no fuel
is spilled.
Note: Valve (1) is removed and
installed from above while valve
(2) is removed and installed from
below.

As Al mentioned, some of the early Stihls did not use the washer behind the clutch (024/026, 034, 064). If they have the "winged" clutch shoe retainers, then they did
not come with the washer. The 084 always had a washer but it had a different oil pump/worm gear arrangement than the smaller saws so it was just its own set-up from
the beginning.

You don't want to try to put the washer behind a clutch with the winged retainers - it won't work.
