They're spring loaded, even if tightened down. You can pull away from the vise, and rotate them out of the way.

100% correct but does work and simple as long as one does not get too aggressive while filing.

Start off by using the same bar gauge. I can also put a stick 1x1 1x2 between the bottom of the bar and chain to tighten it up if needed.
