372 XP goes lean when hot

I had a 372 do similar. The culprit was the carburetor and a fuel filter failure. I replaced both and the saw ran completely normal.

    Loose crank bearings

Loctite 620 compound may work for what you need. It is a retaining compound used to hold bearing races in vehicle rear ends and other cylinder/bearing type retaining.

I put timken 6202 bearings in this saw. I had them in storage from a good deal I picked up online a few years back. I don’t have a strong preference regarding outer crank bearings.

The saw received a tailgate rebuild this afternoon. On to another 10 years of operation.

Wasn’t a clip. An odd set of circumstances led to a small end bearing roller falling out of the bearing. The issue wasn’t caught until the ticking became too consistent to ignore.

Both are aftermarket. The big bore cylinder is heavily ported and has ten or more years of run time. I threw it in the scrap pile and will be starting over with a different port scheme on a 50mm cylinder.

It’s safe to say it ate some steel. This piston and cylinder now Rest In Peace. A new crank, bearings, seals, and top end are on their way.

This rules out detonation. The crown had zero marks.

    Aftermarket piston failure theory discussion

What are the thoughts regarding detonation because I was running 87 octane with a 8 tooth sprocket, ported, with 160 psi? What does detonation feel like in a chainsaw? I hammer this saw bucking 24-30” oak. Nearly every cut was a full length of bar cutting hard with a razor sharp chain set...

    Aftermarket piston failure theory discussion

I’ve tried a 272 piston in the past and found the saw doesn’t run as well. I had skirt length issues with the 272 piston. The ports on this cylinder are at arguably max dimensions for everyday use. I put a aftermarket pop up piston (came in a red box) in the saw Tuesday evening and will be...

Upon assembly the the pin had zero felt movement and the machine fit appeared normal. I don’t want to out the vendor knowing how one online situation can cause major headaches for the business. Especially if my situation is an isolated incident.

New wrist pin and circlips which was supplied with the kit. Wrist pin bearing was tight before and after piston failure.

    Aftermarket piston failure theory discussion

I have a ported well known vendors 372 big bore which ran with out a hiccup for roughly ten years. Then a piston ring locating pin failed and took out the piston. I bought an entire big bore kit from the same vendor and noticed the cylinder and piston were different than previous generations...
