I've made a few out of 365/372 XT wraps for 266's/272's no offsets ,

I'd put a 24"on it , I believe it actually came from factory with a 16" bar ,

Do you use a raker/depth gage to adjust them accordingly ? Stock chain out of the box usually runs in the mid .02's for raker height which should be good . Is your bar in good working order to , I always touch up new chain as it's not razor sharp, C83 pretty good outta the box chain ,

Keep that rim sprocket for a backup, 😆

Pull the starter cover off and check and clean it , could be something simple make sure everything works properly, then start looking for parts or a full cover assembly, EBay or members here probably have what you need,

The 298 has a plastic 2 pawl design flywheel cover, the 2100/2101 were aluminum with a 3 pawl design flywheel covers, that was the downside of the 298 , because they would fail a lot over a period of time,
