I was trying to make the point using the 261 as a more extreme example.
I could pick out the 16 or so Stihl models I've got and rank them in order of how sensitive they are to sub-optimal fuel. 500i 044 least 211 261 most.
Wondered why that was??
The 261 spent this morning bucking logs with...
Thanks for thoughts and it is winterized gas I guess.
I came to start it with fuel that had been in the tank for 2 days in my workshop.
Choke or no choke, I pulled it over 20 times without starting.
Poured that fuel directly into a funnel into my 500i. 500i started second pull.
Put fresh fuel...
It's not m-tronic. With fresh fuel it runs like a scalded cat. Yes the timings advanced which may contribute.
I picked on the 261 as an issue but that's probably because it's such a good saw that I frequently reach for it to use.
There is a definite ease/difficulty hierarchy in starting many of...
Can I share my experience and see if anybody else has found the same?
I've got a lot of Stihl chainsaws and some start a lot easier than others.
I often have trouble getting my ported MS261 to start but it runs fine after that.
Recently I spent ages in the woods and gave up, using another saw...
Thanks for this which is really useful. Nothing can be totally accurate but this is a good guide.
One tiny point. You describe "white birch" as downy birch in europe. Most of the birch growing and cut for firewood in UK and much of europe is Betula pendula or white birch (renamed silver birch by...
Interesting. Watching it nudge the chain as you pulled it, about half were forward and half back. Seemed to have little preference. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Gorilla. I can imagine the 064 running backwards after it is so keen to rip your arm off when you don't pull it over fast enough. I'll look out for mine doing that.
Suspect I'm being thick but can you explain what you did to the flywheels and timing to prevent this. Didn't really understand.
Thanks, that's reassuring. I've got probably 15 other chainsaws all with gasket deletes (so high compression) and most AM coils but this is the only one that does the whole backwards thing. Sounds as though its not a serious fault, just wondered what it is about the 361 which makes it do that?
Interesting observation. Short pull..... yes it was that. I'd modified a 460 carb to fit but it would only run for a few seconds. I discovered that the main jet wouldn't hold a vacuum so swapped out for an oem Zama carb. It was on a short pull and did it twice.
Would be interesting to put the...
Thanks. No I haven't taken the flywheel off and it doesn't look as though anybody played with it before. I didn't intend to advance the timing as I know they generally don't benefit. I might get a timing light and see where it's actually set.
I recently bought a non-running ms361 in fairly good condition. Replaced the ignition coil with after market and have MM'd it, base gasket delete and ported it. Have had some carburation issues but is running fairly well. But... Sometimes when I start it, it runs backwards. I've heard of this...
