    Stihl 044 chinese plastics.

Hi all, Recently got a stihl 044 in rough condition. The saw had an aftermarket cheapo fuel filter on it, and the carb filter was blocked solid. As is often the case with non running saws it was then pillaged for bits. The clutch cover and exhaust are both missing, but I'm not too worried as I...

    Stihl 064

Hi all, I thought I had updated this thread, but obviously not! I decided to bite the bullet and buy a genuine brand new 066 piston and cylinder for it. I also bought the heavy duty filter kit, dual port exhaust cover and the west coast style clutch cover. I put it together, and as expected...

    Stihl 064

Unfortunately got side tracked away from this, but had some time to look at it again. Today I replaced all the fuel lines, and the fuel filter. I washed the tank out as well. There was definitely some water in the half tank of fuel the saw came with which wouldn't have been helping. I replaced...

    Stihl 064

Hi all, I have had a look at the cylinder and have tried the method suggested. It works really well! Unfortunately there seems to be a fairly large gouge in the cylinder from the exhaust port all the way up to the top. I will get some pictures this evening. Unfortunately I think this means I'm...

    Stihl 064

Good news, the bottom end looks really clean, and actually was quite oily so that's something. I guess it wasn't straight fuelled. The piston is an absolute write off. I think the cylinder will be okay, but there is an area around the exhaust port I am a bit concerned about. Looking at the wear...

    Stihl 064

Don't worry, I'm not seriously thinking of reusing the piston! It definitely will need replacing. Will pull the cylinder tomorrow and see what I find inside. Hopefully no water got into the cases, and with a bit of luck the cylinder will be savable too.

    Stihl 064

This saw is too nice! I would be amazed if there is more than 20 hours on this saw. I have started cleaning it up. Amazingly there was a filter on the end of the fuel line, and the fuel line isn't split either. I pressure tested it to see if it leaked as I thought it may be sucking debris in...

    Stihl 064

Well impatience got the better of me, I've just put it on vacuum test which it seems to be holding absolutely fine. Thought while I was waiting I'd take the carb apart and I think I've found the culprit! The saw is fairly tidy so I have a feeling it may have sat for a long time, and was brought...

    Stihl 064

Okay, that is interesting that the 064 cylinder may have better porting. I will have to take a close look at the cylinder when I take it off. I'm no professional sawer, only a firewood guy with a severe case of CAD! I need to figure out what popped it first though, so will be giving it a good...

    Stihl 064

Hi all, Recently picked up a Stihl 064. Fairly tidy, but the top end is done. Definitely needs a piston and quite possibly a cylinder too. I'm thinking to put an 066 top end on it. When did the 064 go out of production as mine must be a very late one. I thought the 0xx series were discontinued...

    Stihl MS400 CM VW Arctic

Apologies for not adding photos yet, I am waiting for some bits to arrive, and will take the photos then. I have not forgotten! In the mean time I have a parts list, I've broken it into sections. Behind recoil cover: 1140 404 3500 generator qty 1 9022 313 0658 screw qty 2 1140 400 1206 flywheel...

Yes, I plan on doing that. I didn't take photos during the build process but I need to take the saw apart again and get some pictures. I will also add a BOM for all the parts needed to convert.

Finally, remove the coil, and route the generator wire behind it and connect to the handle harness. Remount coil and side cover. Fit shroud from 362 and test.

I would be tempted if buying new parts to skip the carburettor heating unless really needed as this adds to the cost substantially. The carb has to be removed and the carb mounting bracket as well. This is a good time to route the power wire from the handle harness through the air box. It is...
