As a last resort, I pulled off the cylinder. The piston was scored, with the rings welded in the compressed position. Looks like the previous owner ran it the first time on straight gas.

Thanks, that looks about right. The parts diagrams are very deceptive, on what parts are compatable. I will see if I can locate the correct cover. Is there a part number for the cover you show? Mine was 753-1192.

I think ebay is probably the best overall. They are usually my first choice, before looking elsewhere. Your decision is whether to get a knockoff or a genuine replacement. There is usually a big difference in cost. You might get lucky and find a NOS unit there, at a decent price. It does happen.
