I've never had a problem. you could also make sure the piston closed off the port if you are worried. a stopper or plug isn't a horrible idea. I have seen mud daubers get into some mufflers before but they were stock mufflers so nothing to do with the mod.

nice save. you probably could have cut a lot of that missing plating out and set the intake to a reasonable number. I have one of that style saws that is a parts saw. If I remember right it had similar wear on the intake side must have been a bad filter set up on those.

In short yes it is known to work the same way but there is only so much real estate to play with. A lot of the construction of a saw. Depends on how it will handle/function. Not always for optimal performance. Actually probably seldom.
