The forestry and logging pictures thread

Starting to have flare-ups popping up with the hot weather and low humidity. I’m glad I fire-watched for a bit extra yesterday when I saw smoke start rising up out of the strip. Old duff log that I had disturbed decided to flame-up.

I’d like to make some fence posts, as I’m running out of railroad ties, and treated fir and pine are very pricey. I’ve got plenty of Port Orford and Incense cedar of the right size on the place. I was thinking about peeling them, drying, and then soaking the bottom 3 feet or so in diesel or...

Lumber, not much for chips with this stuff. I’m not sure what they are doing with the bark on this stuff. They normally burn some of it for electricity. At least some mills here.

    The Official Farming Thread...

I’ve got a lot of fencing planned for in the future, and I’m about out of railroad ties. The price for treated pine or fir posts is, quite frankly, ridiculous. I’m thinking about making my own, but I’m not sure if it would be worth it or not. I have plenty of this Port-Orford and Incense cedar...

Getting some done. Have about 110 more acres to go. Yield is not very good this year. I absolutely love the new rake. I’ve borrowed one before, but it’s nice to finally have my own, and save a lot of time.

New hay rake! I’d prefer to have the 10 wheel, but got a really good deal on this one.

    Trees you've cut

They are being sent to the mill as normal. Boards, OSB, plywood, etc. The wood itself is not really burnt on the fir.

One little steeper pitch in the bottom, otherwise everything else is buncher ground for sure. But we’re hand-falling all of it while their bunchers sit. Interesting.

These aren’t carbide tipped, although they do have some. I’d say that it does actually cut, as there are some decent sized chips getting strewn about.

    Trees you've cut

Cutting straight-up buncher ground right now. Not steep at all. These trees were definitely fried.

Here’s my buncher. Like @Skeans1 said, a continuous rotation disc saw-head. You cut the tree, grab it, and then put it in a pile or what-not. Not that simple in reality, but that’s the concept.

    Trees you've cut

Some shovel operators I work with will push the tree, then flick their grapples up and catch it before it takes off down the hill. Obviously not too big of trees. They will work oversize trees with us too and clean the slash around the tree, push the tree over, hold the butt up in the air for me...
