Wood I.D.- Hickory? Answered: Mockernut Hickory

Is this a type of Hickory? My brother bought me a trailer full of logs, what he was told was oak and hickory. The oak I’m sure about, but I have never had any hickory to work up.

I have experience with Shagbark Hickory and the bark certainly looks different but the inside looks just the same. If only I could smell it. Green hickory has a distinct strong, pungent odor that , to me, doesn't smell very good, but when you burn it it is very sweet and wonderful.

Sho nuff mockernut.......ever cut some that smelled like week old piss? I was never disappointed with any shagbark, but I've run into bad mockernut that smelled like a truckstop bathroom at high tide, both when cutting and burning it.......

I am from the "it doesn't matter" clan. But, there is a good following that thinks the bark needs to be off.
