Why is a wide nose bar better?

I've always heard that they're better, but are they really?

I would think the wide nose would be better for bore cuts, but I'm curious what the experts have to say.

These are both ES bars. The wide nose is quite a bit wider.

This is a regular E bar...

My guess would be the chain slides easier around the end of the wide nose bar,Less strain on the motor.

Personally I prefer the narrower tip. I rarely bore cut and the wider tip may result in slower chain speed i would think

The wider nose lasts longer for plunge cuts.

It's just an idler wheel, it doesn't slow down or speed up a chain.

The wide nose is supposed to be better for bore cutting. It should reduce wear on the bar tip with the increased radius.
I doubt the average guy would notice much difference.

The wide nose should be a hair faster (less friction), but since the chain is the same size, the bar is a bit shorter. The major companies seem to be going to narrower tips to reduce kickback (and possible litigation).

Any difference in speed is minimal.

A wide nose is made for boring but there terrible for it,narrow tip is much easier to bore with.

As said before the sprocket tip is an idler and has no affect on chain speed. It is easier to turn the chain around a larger radius so the wide nose has less resistance, probly could run the chain a hair looser too

I would agree with that . The tooth of the chain at the wide nose when buried is at less of an exaggerated angle through the wood

The reason I ask, is that I saw a wide nose for sale somewhere and the guy wanted twice what a standard ES bar would cost... and now it's sold. Why would someone pay that much more for a wide nose bar over a standard bar?
