Why don't more people run PS3 chain instead of 325 on 50CC saws?

And again we agree. 3/8 has proven faster for me but I like .325 on my lighter limbing saw (Jonsered 2152). It's smoother and less grabby on smaller wood.

This is my experience as well. I like .325 for limbing. It's smooth and the smaller diameter sprocket makes it torquey (is that a word?) enough that minor pinches from relieving compression don't cause much of a problem.

When discussing whether 3/8, .325 or NK is faster, I wonder about how the chains are sharpened. Especially, the 'cutting angle' or raker depth.

If the chains are sharpened so that each has the same cutting angle, say 6 degrees, then there is more likely to be a valid comparison between the chains cutting ability.

If we are getting fussy, the 'optima'l angles for one chain may be different than for another, but it brings up the point that there are many factors.

I think that most people just run what the saw came with.

isn't PS3 safety chain? For speed wouldn't PS be better or PM if you want semi chisel? PM3 is semi chisel safety chain as I recall.

Yeah, there can be all sorts of differences in chains, but if the chains were all taking the same 'bite' into the wood, it would make comparisons more relevant.

The more important question for my work is when I have to do the sharpening. 325 lasts a lot longer before it needs sharpening, especially if it is semi or micro chisel. It also rarely breaks on me. I have had a couple of 3/8LP chains give up.

If I'm not mistaken Joe @Red97 did this test. 3/8 low pro vs 325 vs 3/8. Think it was a 50cc saw..an Echo?? Maybe. Anyway the low pro was fastest followed by 3/8 and lastly .325. Been running 3/8 on my CS490 instead of the .325 it came with. 3/8 seams to cut a little faster but I think the 325 was smoother on small stuff.

I can see your point having a level playing field so to speak....Same angles etc across the board.

That would be an interesting test to look at. Someone trying to eliminate the big variables and working out what really makes a difference on something like cutting speed. However, there are other things people have to take into consideration in their cutting. Like 'OOwyk' referring to how the chain holds out in use and how often it needs sharpening.

I'm a big fan of .325 NK chain. It is as strong as stock .325 chain, so no worries about chain breakage (I use it on a 64cc engine). It definitely needs a bigger cutting angle from stock in order to move some wood, but the biggest advantage for me (at 72 years old) is how light the bar and chain are. It just makes the cutting experience so much easier.

picco is good for as others said low powered saws but doesnt load the ported 261 enough
i have some 325 stuff but on the 261 the 3/8 feels smoother to me

Same grind on both?

I added the word here.

Should have also added 18"

Using Oregon lp chisel on the 200T makes for quick touch up after two or three tanks in oak.
I don't use it on anything else. Locust gets picco chain. Dead locust kills any chain in two tanks or less.

I didn't know Oregon made a lp chisel. Got a part #?

I have tons of .325 stuff. I like RS or lp I really don’t care for even nk sets. They bind the wider kerf help with limbing and tackling spring poles.
The ps stuff is nice on 40cc saws or battery saws.

I think more teeth and a wider kerf really make .325 the better choice for limbing and small work. I think the geared down .325 x7 helps too. That was a good point someone brought up

My bad your right. Was looking at this chain for the 435 in 325 by mistake.IMG_20190621_093132.jpg
I had just finished sharpening the picco on the 200T

Maybe Oregon's listening and will start producing this 325 chain in 3/8 LP. I would buy it.

We was talking about the new oregon chain back in Jan. Nate brought it up in the CRG.
Seems oregon is more into this nano 325 chain for the small saws.

Do wish they would do a LP chisel though.

I was mistaken about the chain on the limbing saws. Looked closer and it is Raisman lp chisel. Forgot they were swapped out for spring testing, opps. The good news is they are still at half toof and running just fine.
