Cuz I just picked one up locally from a local logger, and he told me he bought it back in the 80’s. I’m just wondering if it’s worth keeping? How does it compare to a 797/125 Mac?

It runs, and the vibes are pretty horrible! Not exactly a high revving machine.

It also came with a brand new 50” Cannon bar! And to top it all off I found another 242! :D

It has a six shoe clutch and I checked the transfer bulge... it’s definitely an 090. Unfortunately it looks like the muffler and the clutch cover are AM parts. But still it’s in overall awesome shape.

If I tell you it’s worth keeping around, does that mean you will be getting rid of the 242?
I’ve had several people ask me about that 242... and somebody already claimed it. Looks like it’s in pretty decent shape, and the compression is great. Looks pretty good next to my MMWS 242...

They are pretty cool but not worth what they will bring on eBay. If I run across a reasonable one I would probably sell it. Definitely not a saw I would use much. A ported 395 or 661 is much more practical.

The 090 will pull away from most saws once the bar length gets to 60" and above. And yes, AV is the way to go on those. Though not as smooth as an AV model, the gear drive versions tend to give less vibes as well. My two favorite long bar work saws are a 125 with 50" bar and an 090 with anything longer than that. And I've run most of the other large saws ported and not in big wood.

I have not had any experience with anything 50” or longer I could see that though they are torquey. Quite a bit slower with a 42” though. That would handle about anything we have around here. A 125 Mac seems easier to handle than an 090 or contra to me too.

It seems the 60" and up are the tickets for them, I run a 48" on my 070 and it can chatter the teeth in hardwood.

A 125 is a sports car compared with an 090. My 090g handles a 96" bar with ease, though I don't. Not many other single man saws can make that claim.
