I think a lot of folks are using loctite 518 / permatex 51817 which are the same. But you can probably get away with and case sealant. Yamabond, Hondabond, Threebond, Hylomar(sp?) I'm sure there's more.

I use 3 bond 1184 or dirko ht which is stihl oem sealant. There are many others that will do the job though. It just has to be gas and oil resistant.

Used permatex ultra grey on the last base gasket delete. Still going strong and no issues. That said, I would imagine yamabond, 3 bond etc. would be a better choice.

I’ve used Yamabond 4 and motoseal both with good results. Any anaerobic sealant should work

Need a small paintbrush to apply motoseal, it’s pretty thin. Still works well though

I'm using it but what makes 518 better than the Yamabond sitting next to it in the box and how does it aid in a smooth transition? I appreciate that it doesn't set and can be cleaned up later. Less pressure to get it perfect the first time.

518 sets in the absence of air, so exposed 518 that gets squeezed out into the crankcase just washes away when the saw is ran. This way you never really have the risk of excess sticking out into the lower transfers or impulse circuit on some saws. Although, I’ve never had a problem with other sealants as long as you use a thin but consistent layer. Too much will just get squeezed out excessively. I do prefer the dirko ht or 1184 3 bond I use now over 518 for several reasons. It comes down to personal preference really. There’s plenty of choices to choose from. Experiment and choose the one that works best for you.
