compression fuel spark.

some brake cleaner down the throat of the air horn is an easy test to see if you have compression and spark

check for flooding by removing the spark plug, look inside cylinder to see if there is scoring

remove fuel line and check for fuel coming out...

I check for a starter rope and handle, fuel that's not watered down, if your feeling lucky check the on off switch, if that doesn't work check chain tension, still no start then check spark screen and make sure it has spark

Can do it in four.

Intake - engine needs both air and fuel/oil mix to run check filters air and fuel.

Compression - needs at least 100 PSI minimum to be able to run at all. If it feels weak, check it.

Power - A good healthy spark is required to light the fuel air mixture under compression. This is a good place to start by pulling the spark plug and checking for fuel and spark at the same time.

Exhaust - While not as common a plugged/blocked exhaust will not allow an engine to run.

It always comes down to these four things, always. Intake, Compression, Power and Exhaust. If you check for them you can diagnose any engine, 2 or 4 stroke.

I think that part of the differences in responses depend on whether, it is:

- a saw that has been running, but just won't start. Or;

- a saw that maybe has been sitting for some time, is unknown, is being offered for sale, or brought in for service, etc.
