@Deets066 have you tried pferd files? They are my favorite so far. I haven’t tried there double bevel but there round files are way better than oregon. Last longer and remove more material faster.

Save edge double bevel

I did what Jeff did to 325 lgx fiddy. It would not feed right. Instead of dropping the drags it got converted to square with the double bevel. Cured the feed problem. Next time it got more blunt but better and the chain just last and last. It got rocked so, it was a rinse and repeat. Fast chain ain't everything at work but, it was still faster in the cut than using the two in one sharpener round filed.

Cool. Probably made the square conversion a bit easier after being opened up by the 3/8 file. [emoji106]

I’ve used any ol file laying near a chain. As long as you can get the file deep enough it doesn’t make a hell of a difference. Problem with the small files on 3/8 you’ve gotta hold up on the file to get the top plate.

Well. I made just 1 cut with the chain filed with the 3/8 file. I took a video of it. Then I filed 2 swipes with the correct .325 file. Looked much sharper when filed correctly.
I am surprised to find out that the saw cut faster with the 3/8 filed chain, than the correct file. Weird.
The saw felt better with the chain filed correctly though.
Let me upload the vids.

This is 3/8 filed .325 chain.
This is .325 chain filed properly.

The larger file usually really opens the gullet up. May be the reason it seemed faster.

Even after I sharpened it correctly, it cut slower. Weird.
Took bigger chips though. Really loaded the saw. I may have been leaning a bit hard on it too.

Are you using a file guide?
A fun thing to try is a small file guide with a larger file. For example a 3/16 file in a 5/32 guide.
It drops the file down into the gullet and gives a meaner hook.

Here is a picture of a 3/8's done with a 13/64" file in a 3/16" guide. The gullet is hogged as well.

It cuts fast if you have enough power.
I like it for limbing with bigger saws. Sucks for boring though.

Here is a good thread:

Yup too much hook kills boring abilities I found. Too much off raker too. The angle of the cutter is important and keeping rakers at correct height with a gauge. If the rakers are all at the same height the chain will cut straight even if the cutter length is different between individual cutters L/R. Cutter length does not matter nor amount of swipes per cutter. For a sporty fast chain for a gtg that I have impressed a few people is take RS stihl or oregon lgx...cut gullet out, set tooth to 25 degrees set all rakers with gauge... then take a another swipe or two off free hand. Cuts great and not too aggressive where you can’t bore or lean on it. I learned that from a few people with more knowledge than me on chains. For my firewood chain I don’t take another swipe off the rakers and less agressive hook on chisel chain. Lasts longer. Semi chisel I cut gullet more aggressively than chisel, it’s the key to getting it cut fast. I can’t file square but I can get round to cut decent.

One thing is for sure playing with different hook, angle and raker combinations really helped me learn what works best for me. Trying different chain brands, file brands, sprockets, skip chain, semi chisel and chisel...some filing styles work better on certain chain than others.
