I had a very productive day (for me) in the woods yesterday. Got 25 logs out, most are small except for this big white ash. Only criticism I have for myself is the hinge isn’t uniform, a little fat on the both sides. But apparently it didn’t matter because it went right where I wanted it and I didn’t get any deep fiber pull. Happy guy. Got some nice logs out of this one. Feel like I got a nice low stump but I’ll see how it looks after the snow melts lol

Had one victim of felling damage. Here’s how it went.

Wife - Looks like it might reach your saw box.

Me - should fall about 10 feet short of it.

Tree - I hate your gas can

It broke the lever off the spout (circled), next time I’ll move my stuff lol

I like your chain box - needed items close to work zone. A suggestion if I may give one? Carry your bar oil in a easy pour container, which can fit in box .no need to carry a gal that requires extra hand to carry. Hey disregard this if it won’t work for you. Thanks man - like your posts !

Just realized no wedge pouch? Everything could fit in that or on the belt as well as a crown royal bag for chains that’s a lot of extra weight you’re packing out with you every day.

I’m not really packing it, it all goes in my loader bucket and gets plopped somewhere out of the way...normally. Wedge pouch is on my chaps belt, I just keep extras in the saw box if one breaks. Great suggestions though, thanks brudda.

Dont let that attitude come into your head when cutting timber. Never take a chance working in the woods. Leads to complacent work. You'll get bit by a tree.

You’re absolutely right! I didn’t think of this little F up that way and I should have. I’m doing my best to not be complacent in the felling process at the stump since my confidence has skyrocketed in technique. This seemingly small mistake that I made a joke out of was a step down the wrong path. Thanks for highliting that man.

You can estimate the height of a tree by holding any stick at arms length so the top of the tree and where your notch will be are at the top of the and where you are holding the stick.
Search for image or video, and try it on a few trees. Good trick to know from time to time.
To get the right length you hold your arm out and tilt wrist so stick reaches your eye. Then hold it out and walk towards or away from tree until tree fits between top and bottom of stick.

I learned that in a basic forestry class I took a few years ago and forgot all about it. Can’t remember what it was called, I’ll do some digging and post it in here. Thanks!
