Is that what is supposed to be where the hole is? Mine has a rubber plug there. What does the self sharpening mechanism look like.
Kinda neat little saw, has a self sharpening chain system built in. Takes a special chain though. They are easy to work on not like their little brothers.

I believe the rubber plug is correct. The sharpener is the little doo-dad next to the handle.

Pop the clutch cover off and you will see. It's just a stone that gets pushed into the chain at the sprocket by the "button".

That's why I subscribe to this site: learning all of the technical lingo . . .

Surprisingly, taking the clutch cover off appears to be the hardest part on this saw!

But it does appear that the doo-dad (round post) near the front, right of the top handle at one point pushed a stone into the chain.

Wonder what the doo-mom was doing at the time . . . .?

I've been criticized quite often, for using multi-syllabic words. So I figured as a measure of recompense, I would keep it simple.

Well don't lower yourself to our standards, who else is going to keep the place classy? I don't mind learning a new to me word now and then, still enjoy teasing you though. :)

Nice saw there Dale! Bought this P42 over the phone last night, pick it up in the morning, yellow isn't my color but a friend had it running when he bought it a while ago, if anyone is interested PM me, I am not attached to it yet.

Sweet then the MMWS 288 is back in the “Raffle” :))))

Erik
Lol. Upon a quick inspection, and subsequent teardown...the 288 needs a bit of work. The 181 needs lots of parts, possibly a cylinder..haven’t made it to the 038 yet.
Here is a pic of the piston on the 288..not terrible..but not perfect3EEAFF98-F950-436C-B8F8-21E3AC8DB389.jpeg
Cylinder off shows a bit of porting and fingering...think I’m going to try to salvage it. I’ll throw in a meteor with cabers. The intake lower lip shows some discoloration...I think it has started to wear through the plating.
