Ok yes is true I'm a little triggerd by this awesome little saw! think it's time to walk away from it for a bit...it runs awful!
Don't be deceived 70% of the cutting is the chain doing the work I dought it would have enough power to pull a stock chain in that hardwood...
HAHA thats ace.. my first saw was a Jonsered of the same calibur. big piece of poo. tried everything and it doesnt run much better than yrs. then started buying stihls and been happy ever after.

That odd misfire thing you were fighting in vid 1 is just the same in this vid ? A right head scratcher to say ..The Least .. !!
Long shot......
I don't think you mentioned anything on the flywheel and if you did any timing work. Maybe there is something going on with a combination of the fuels you run in the saw ...coil...or timing /flywheel position. It sounds much more likely to be ignition now from your list of swaped components ?

I had some free time to have a look at this little saw today..
Ok here's what I found... (It had no timing advance stock timing I never touched the timing).
Last few times I used this saw it would kickback on start up like violent almost pull the pull start out of ya hand I didn't remember it doing that before has been a few years the last time I run it.
Anyways I found one of the problems it has stripped the flywheel key.
There would be a few guy's that would of picked up on that having a chuckle to themselves that was the popping sound in the vid easy to spot if you know what the cause of that popping is lol lucky me I do now 1st time I've even incounted this myself.
Now I get what they are talking about with Dim Sim saws or whatever his name was with his popping saws with to much advance.
Few pics as you can see all looked good from the outside I didn't realise the flywheel had slipped under the nut and washer even the threads on the crank still lined up lol.
Whatever happened in there it's a mess in the flywheel it was way out.

2nd problem I found is this flywheel hitting coil in less than 10min run time I sanded cleaned flywheel when I just put the good coil in it and it didn't have them rub marks then.
And don't mind the rust marks on the flywheel from the coil in the pic saw has been out in the rain I kicked it to the side of my wood heap after I dropped it in the last vid a few weeks ago only picked it up off the ground today lol.
I'm going to have to pull the saw apart and swap the crank/bearings with one out of a parts saw I have with less than a 1hr run time on it.
This POS won't beat me I will get it to run as it should at the minimum for a tank of fuel! Lol

In the meantime I picked up a crate with a ms170 and I think a Stihl 024? not had a good look at it yet I paid 5 bucks for them.

I wasn't going to do anything with the ms170 apart from use it for parts for mine but It got the better of me so had a good look over the 170 and what it needs to run.
Cleaned it up and looking over it she needs a lot of parts but looking online I can get the parts cheap (Chinese parts) is it worth it probably not but I'm going ahead with fixing it and doing some new mods I've not tried before and going with a 16inch bar and maybe a Piltz dog for an extra hp or two! lol.
I can't afford OEM Stihl parts for a ms170 a OEM coil here in Australia probably cost $800 from the dealers Lol.
As you can see it's had the usual home owner abuse! Lol
Cylinder cleaned up nice and I've done a few out there mods with the porting so far will see how it runs its just a bit of fun like you guy's I enjoy working on engines.

Few odd things the previous owner of the ms170 did as part of his diagnostics as to what was wrong with his little saw- cut the ignition coil lead?. And cut a big chunk of that annoying handle to make removing the recoil starter so easy?? Lol.

Is there no play in the coil mount holes to give you the gap for the coil ? surely that would save you the time and agro with a full strip apart..unless you think the bearings are shot of corse.

Yep I have plenty of play with coil to set the air gap.
It feels like there is a little play in the crank but as you say I might just set a bigger air gap so I can atlest see if the saw runs with a good flywheel and correct timing.

I only have what you see in the pic no covers I'll measure the pistion so I can work out what cc it is.
If the pull start cover "Stihl " logo is not to faded ( cant tell from your pic) , you can see if its a German or USA made saw.

Just measured the piston it's 42mm I think that's 024
Looking online the Chinese make all the parts for the 024 it might be worth fixing yet I will look into it.
It's just not worth it to buy OEM Stihl parts here if you need a lot of parts for a saw a cylinder for a ms880 is about $900 last time I looked.

Yup, 42mm sounds right to be the standard 024 not the supper.
Have you got big import taxes and shipping costs into Aus ? ..I mean, we have expensive OEM parts for all saws in the UK compared to the US , but yours sound real costly !

I'm not sure why they rip us off so much down here on parts at the end of the day I think they just don't want us fixing saws.

I see folks saying that they have just got , "this top end" or that "new piston" for what to me seems about half the price I can as a like for like OEM spare. Its why a fare few things reach ...."Not economic to repair" dam fast with the time to work on stuff factored in.
By the way, but misleading comment in my last post...a supper 024 should have a longer stroke by 2mm and will be the same 42mm piston.
