Just scored a decent load of what the owner called cherry.
It had a few pieces of red oak mixed in as well.
I cut some wild cherry back about 5 yrs ago and it was tad darker in the heart wood.
I'm using the cherry for my smoker, and would prefer not to get it confused with red oak.
What's you guys thoughts on these pics.

Thanks

Looks like cherry to me. Red oak should be easy to tell by the straight grains. Also oak smells to me like a wine barrel. Lol

I've got one that stumped me for years, finally described it to a forestry guy I was buying saws from and he knew it. Native but evidently not very common here, I've never run across them anywhere else.

Grows out along a stream/swampy area along the backside of my property, biggest one's maybe 6" diameter, beavers moved in and have downed the majority of them.
Wood is light colored and fairly hard/dense, smells like piss when cut.

Not Elm, leaves do look similar though not much else.
Fairly smooth bark, even near the base.
Has at least 4 common names I've heard depending on location, very wide distribution.
I'd never even heard of the specific name I was first told but after looking it up was familiar with a couple others.

Bingo.

Also known as musclewood, ironwood and what I was originally told, blue beech.
Ranges from eastern Canada to down past the Yucatan.
Has a specific gravity up there with hickory, would probably be be great firewood if there was enough of it to bother with.
Supposed to make good tool handles.

The Hophornbeam linked above is not what wcorey's pictures are. We have Hophornbeam up here, also known locally as ironwood. There is a different wood not native to here though, nicknamed ironwood, that may be the same as Bill's pics. Basically, I'm saying that Eastern Hophornbeam is a different species than blue beach, but they may both be called ironwood in their own areas

I believe what I have is American Hornbeam, as opposed to Hophornbeam and yes some of the other common names can apply to either. Musclewood applies particularly to the type I have due to the obvious physical characteristics of the trunk.
I guess there's 30-40 different related species so id can get messy...

The eastern variety we have rarely gets bigger than 8". Once in awhile there will be a 16"er. It has stringy bark and it's harder than hell. It's the best firewood we have here, but there's not enough of it.
