3372F8F2-278C-46AF-984A-E70FC11501CD.jpeg I cut some gum. If it fits through the door no split. Burns fine. I twice mistook for an oak.
Once I realized what I had I noodled it all to just fit in shop stove. 288 with 404 is my only splitter except for a maul and axes. Not worth beating my brains out. Makes heat. Doesn’t coal well but if I had to take what’s available I’d cut him too

I need some help with this one from westerns or possibly Canadians. Definitely not a local tree. I see it a lot in houses around here built in the 50s and 60s. But never see it these days. Has extremely tight straight grain in the quarter sawn sections and wild wavy grain in the plain sawn sections. It has a very distinct odor that is unpleasant. And pretty rot resistant these were bleachers at a school from the 50s.

I never figured out for sure what this was but it turned out nice. I’m leaning towards hemlock fir family but may never know.

The odor and geographical location leads me to suspect "skunk spruce."
It may have other regional names.
I'm from Northern Maine where it's a common tree and the name fits.

There are so many things I wish I was good at..wood ID is down the list (but it’s definitely on it). Any help with this one would be appreciated

Had a couple of those growing in the yard where I lived for a time in SC. Pretty distinctive leaf shape.

I’m in Alabama...and I know we’ve got about 1/2million different kinds of oak..water and pin being everywhere. Lol, you’d think as much as I like cutting wood that I’d learn to ID it. I appreciate all of your help!
