I agree. I use to know my leaves fairly well. But I agree with improving your knowledge on identifying trees other than leaves.
I learned a lot from an intern I did with the US Forest Service. An old-timer taught me more than my professor.
I might post a few odd-ball hardwood trees that old-timer helped with from a nearby National Forest and see if someone can ID them.

That’s a maple big as *s-word.

Them are big rounds. The gray scale bark is wide, but seems tighter due to the pic perspective.
Yes they are big but there is bigger ones in the pile where these rounds came from. The rounds were hauled in. The leaves on the ground are oak, the whole woods is oak and pines.

Wondering what kind of wood I scrounged off craigslist today. I am thinking Beechwood or Hackberry. The guy said it was a 150 year old tree.
